Warriors Dominate Lawrenceville, Improve to 5-0 and Clinch Playoff Berth

LAWRENCEVILLE – The Casey-Westfield Warriors traveled to Lawrenceville on Saturday afternoon, spoiling the Indians’ Homecoming game at Loeb Field. The Warriors shined in all aspects of the game, controlling the line of scrimmage and delivering highlight-reel plays on special teams. With the 40-13 road win, the Warriors improved to 5-0 and became playoff eligible. Lawrenceville added two late scores after the game’s continuous clock was invoked.

Wyatt Erickson started the game with an opening kickoff to the Indians, where Daryn Hupp and Ayden Spittler combined for the stop at the Lawrenceville 23-yard line.

The defense stepped up after giving up a couple of first downs when Fred Thomas got the strip-sack on the Indians quarterback, and Daryn Hupp recovered the fumble at the Lawrenceville 44-yard line to give the Warriors their first possession of the game.

Luke Karras and Kellen Sullivan rushed for back-to-back first downs, moving the ball to the Lawrenceville two-yard line. Two plays later, Nolan Clement followed his offensive line over the goal line for the first points of the day. Erickson added the point-after for a 7-0 lead.

The Indians’ second possession stalled, forcing them to punt the ball away from deep in their own territory and setting up CW’s second drive.

The Warriors needed just two plays, as Clement picked up 25 yards on the ground and then found Nick Fouty for a 23-yard touchdown pass. A second point-after by Erickson extended the CW advantage to 14-0.

The Warriors looked to add an early score in the second quarter, but a defensive stand by Lawrenceville resulted in an interception in the endzone, ending the opportunity for the Purple and Gold.

The CW defense continued to hold its own, forcing the Indians to punt again. The punt found its way into the hands of Nick Fouty, who weaved his way behind his blockers and through the Lawrenceville defenders for a 56-yard touchdown. The Erickson PAT upped the Warrior lead to 21-0.

The Purple and Gold added one more score before the intermission when the Clement-to-Fouty connection resulted in a 25-yard touchdown. The point-after was blocked, but the Warriors’ lead expanded to 27-0 by halftime.

When play resumed in the third quarter, the Warriors made quick work of the kickoff, as Fouty fielded the kick and again got good blocking as he scampered down the near sideline for a 70-yard touchdown. Erickson got back on track and booted the PAT through for a 36-0 lead.

Two plays into the next Lawrenceville drive, Daryn Hupp forced a fumble and Korbyn Bennett recovered it to give the Warriors back the ball.

Six plays later, Erickson got his first varsity rushing touchdown as he rumbled seven yards through the Indians’ defense for the score. The point-after was wide, but CW held a 40-0 advantage that brought the continuous clock into play for the balance of the game.

The Warriors worked many combinations of players through the rest of the game, while the Indians kept their starting squad on the turf and were able to put a couple of late scores on the board for the final 40-13 score.
