Eight dead after weekend violence
Chicago Police say more than 55 people were shot, at least eight fatally, in the city over Labor Day weekend.
The reports come after Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order on Saturday, demanding that President Donald Trump stand down from his threat to deploy National Guard personnel to Chicago.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker has scheduled an event Tuesday afternoon to discuss the potential deployment.
Mexican national’s extradition sought
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says federal agencies are working to coordinate the extradition of a Mexican national charged with killing 24-year-old Emma Schafer in Springfield.
Gabriel P. Calixto was captured by Mexican authorities last Thursday.
Noem said Calixto had been evading justice for two years after he allegedly stabbed Schafer to death in July 2023.
