Helm’s Two-Way Masterpiece Leads Champaign Central Past Casey-Westfield 3-0

The Casey-Westfield varsity softball team ran into a buzzsaw on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 to Champaign Central in neutral-site tournament action. The contest was defined by a spectacular two-way performance from Champaign Central junior Haley Helm, who launched a decisive home run in the first inning and followed it up with a complete-game shutout in the circle.

The Maroons wasted no time seizing control of the game. In the top of the first inning, Coryn Christ and Grace Bandy reached base to set the table for Helm. The junior slugger delivered the punishing blow, crushing a three-run home run to give Champaign Central a sudden 3-0 advantage. The early power surge chased Casey-Westfield starting pitcher Arhianna Bonds before an out was recorded.

Senior Ava Goble took over in the circle for Casey-Westfield and was nothing short of brilliant in relief. Goble completely silenced the Champaign Central lineup for the remainder of the afternoon, tossing seven scoreless innings. She scattered just four hits, issued a single walk, and racked up a staggering 12 strikeouts to keep the Panthers within striking distance.

Unfortunately for Casey-Westfield, Helm was equally dominant in the opposing dugout. Armed with a comfortable lead, the Champaign Central ace carved through the Panthers’ lineup. Helm tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out 10 batters to secure the 3-0 victory.

Casey-Westfield managed to threaten with extra-base hits—sophomore Gabriela Frye ripped a double and junior Ella Whitacre blasted a triple—but the Panthers simply could not find the timely hit needed to bring runners home. Anna Karras and H. Schackmann rounded out the offensive production for Casey-Westfield with a single apiece.

For Champaign Central, junior Mya de la Cruz was the lone player on either team to record a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 to help secure the tournament win.
