Casey-Westfield Uses Five-Run Fifth Inning to Defeat Cumberland 7-3

The Casey-Westfield varsity softball team picked up a 7-3 non-conference road victory over Cumberland on Monday afternoon, breaking open a tight contest with a massive five-run surge in the fifth inning. Strong pitching and aggressive baserunning fueled the visitors’ success, allowing them to pull away in the late innings.

Casey-Westfield struck right out of the gate, pushing a pair of runs across the plate in the top of the first inning. Cumberland responded quickly in the bottom half, manufacturing an unearned run without a hit against Casey-Westfield starter Ava Goble to cut the deficit to 2-1.

From there, the game settled into a tense pitchers’ duel. Goble was sharp during her three innings of work, striking out five batters while holding Cumberland hitless to earn the victory. Cumberland’s Mia Holsapple matched the intensity, navigating around Casey-Westfield hits to keep her team within striking distance through the early frames.

The game shifted dramatically in the top of the fifth. Casey-Westfield’s offense capitalized on Cumberland’s defensive miscues—the hosts committed three errors on the day—to break the game wide open with five runs. The decisive rally extended the visitors’ lead to a commanding 7-1, with all five runs in the frame going down as unearned.

The Casey-Westfield lineup racked up 10 hits overall, led by multi-hit performances from Anna Karras, H. Schackmann, and Addison Seaton, who each tallied two hits. Lucy Moore and Ella Whitacre added a double apiece. The visitors also wreaked havoc on the basepaths with seven stolen bases, including three by Arhianna Bonds and two by Karras.

Cumberland refused to go quietly, stringing together a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Bonds, who pitched the final four innings in relief. Ashton Tolen, Jade Carr, L. Schnepper, and Avery Millsap each recorded hits for the hosts to spark the late offense. However, Bonds settled in and closed the door in the seventh to secure the 7-3 victory for Casey-Westfield.
