Goble’s Dominant Relief Stint Sparks Casey-Westfield to 12-0 Shutout Win

The Casey-Westfield varsity softball team utilized a dominant, combined one-hitter from its pitching staff to secure a 12-0 non-conference victory over Parke Heritage on Thursday afternoon. The hosts broke the game open late, capitalizing on a late-inning offensive surge to walk away with a commanding shutout.

The game began as a tight defensive battle. Casey-Westfield managed to manufacture a single run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the score remained frozen there through the middle frames.

The story of the game was the spectacular performance of Casey-Westfield’s bullpen. G. Gilbert started in the circle for the hosts, battling through one inning. She allowed one hit and two walks while striking out one batter on 21 pitches. The rest of the afternoon belonged to Ava Goble and Arhianna Bonds, who completely shut down the Parke Heritage lineup.

Goble entered the game and was practically unhittable over four dominant innings of relief. She retired all 15 batters she faced, striking out nine while throwing 55 pitches and preventing Parke Heritage from recording a single hit or walk. Bonds pitched the final two innings, striking out two and keeping the visitors hitless to cement the combined shutout.

While the Casey-Westfield pitching staff cruised, the offense finally awakened late in the game. After four scoreless innings, the hosts plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 3-0.

The dam finally broke in the bottom of the sixth. The Casey-Westfield bats exploded for five runs, highlighted by a home run from Anna Karras. Karras finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Lucy Moore also had a monster game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a game-high six RBIs.

H. Schackmann provided a perfect day offensively, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI double. Goble helped her own cause with a 2-for-5 performance, driving in three runs and crossing the plate twice.

Casey-Westfield sealed the victory by adding four final insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Parke Heritage’s offense was stifled throughout the game. Leah Mathis recorded the team’s only hit in a 1-for-3 showing. In the circle, Addison Coffman took the start, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits over 5.1 innings of work, while Maddi Crowder pitched 1.2 innings of relief.
