The Casey-Westfield varsity softball team secured a dramatic 16-15 victory over Teutopolis in a non-conference home shootout on Monday afternoon. Trailing late in the game, the hosts exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and walked off the field with the win in a game defined by relentless offense and defensive struggles from both sides.

Teutopolis set an aggressive pace early, pushing three runs across the plate in both the first and second innings to build a 6-1 advantage. The visitors continued their offensive onslaught in the top of the third inning, plating six runs—aided by critical Casey-Westfield fielding errors—to stretch their lead to 12-5.

Malea Helmink was a dominant force for Teutopolis, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, five runs scored, and two RBIs. Jersey Gaddis also left the yard, driving in a run while scoring once. Kera Hartke and Lauren Shue set the table constantly, finishing with three and two hits, respectively, while combining for five runs scored.

However, Casey-Westfield refused to fold. The hosts relentlessly chipped away at the deficit, utilizing incredible plate discipline to draw 10 walks against the Teutopolis pitching staff. They manufactured four runs in the second inning and three more in the third to stay within striking distance.

Senior Lucy Moore was a massive factor in keeping Casey-Westfield alive, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, drawing three walks, scoring twice, and driving in two runs. G. Gilbert provided the necessary power, blasting a home run as part of a 2-for-5 performance that included three RBIs. Arhianna Bonds also delivered a strong showing, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Bonds’ most significant contribution, however, came in the circle. After starter Ava Goble was forced from the game in the third inning, Bonds entered in relief and completely changed the complexion of the contest. Over 4.1 innings, Bonds allowed just three earned runs on six hits, struck out five, and did not issue a single walk. Her stabilizing presence gave the Casey-Westfield offense the opportunity to mount a comeback.

Trailing 15-10 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Casey-Westfield lineup erupted. Capitalizing on fatigued Teutopolis pitching—which threw a combined 182 pitches—the hosts pushed six runs across the plate to take their first lead of the afternoon, 16-15.

Bonds shut the door in the top of the seventh inning, retiring the Teutopolis lineup and sealing the incredible walk-off comeback.
