Casey-Westfield Pitching Shines in 7-0 Shutout Over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City
The Casey-Westfield varsity baseball team utilized a dominant pitching performance and capitalized on defensive miscues to defeat Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City (CHBC) 7-0 in Tuesday’s home non-conference matchup.
The hosts delivered a masterful combined shutout, limiting the CHBC offense to a mere two hits throughout the afternoon. Casey-Westfield’s pitching staff controlled the strike zone from the opening frame, racking up nine strikeouts and issuing just two walks, preventing the visitors from ever establishing a rhythm on the basepaths.
After two scoreless innings, Casey-Westfield finally broke through in the bottom of the third. Benefiting from CHBC fielding errors, the hosts plated a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead.
Despite ultimately taking the loss, CHBC pitcher Isaac Wells turned in a strong individual effort on the mound. The sophomore struck out seven batters and allowed just one hit over 4.2 innings of work. However, the CHBC defense struggled to support its pitching staff, committing three costly errors that continually extended innings. Incredibly, all seven of Casey-Westfield’s runs on the afternoon were unearned.
Casey-Westfield blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, pushing four runs across the plate to build a commanding 6-0 advantage. They tacked on a final insurance run in the sixth to put the game completely out of reach.
Senior Ben Askins and freshman Lance Roadarmel provided the only bright spots for the CHBC offense, each recording a single to account for the team’s entire hit total. Max Kircher pitched 1.1 innings in relief for the visitors, allowing four hits and one unearned run.
With the 7-0 victory, Casey-Westfield secured a complete team win, combining flawless, one-error defense with opportunistic hitting and lockdown pitching.
