The Cumberland varsity baseball team used a middle-inning offensive surge, highlighted by a Lance Lock home run, to defeat visiting Casey-Westfield 7-4 in Thursday’s non-conference matchup in Toledo.

Junior Lance Lock provided the heavy lifting at the plate for Cumberland, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, a run scored, and a team-high three RBIs. Fellow junior Maddox Miller also delivered a standout performance in the middle of the order, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored to spark the offense.

Senior Grady Jones was the anchor on the mound for the home team. Jones went the distance, throwing 103 pitches over seven complete innings. He allowed just two earned runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking three. Jones effectively navigated around four Cumberland defensive errors, relying on his defense to turn a crucial double play and keeping the Casey-Westfield batters at bay when it mattered most.

Casey-Westfield struck first, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning. However, Cumberland quickly settled in and responded. The home team plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead and erupted for three more in the third to build a 5-3 advantage. A two-run fourth inning gave Cumberland a comfortable four-run cushion that proved to be enough for Jones to close out the game.

Senior Hudson McElravy contributed significantly to the offensive output, driving in a pair of runs on a hit and a sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, the Cumberland lineup used speed and plate discipline to constantly pressure the Casey-Westfield defense. Jones and freshman Adyn Heuerman both scored runs and stole a base despite not registering a hit; Jones was hit by a pitch twice, while Heuerman drew a walk. As a team, Cumberland tallied four stolen bases on the afternoon.

Casey-Westfield managed to scratch across a final run in the top of the sixth inning, but Jones shut the door in the seventh to secure the 7-4 victory.
