Goble Tosses Shutout, Homers to Lead Casey-Westfield Past Murphysboro 3-0
Senior Ava Goble delivered a masterful two-way performance on Saturday, pitching a complete-game shutout and hitting a home run to propel the Casey-Westfield varsity softball team to a 3-0 home tournament victory over Murphysboro.
Goble was in complete control in the circle, keeping the Murphysboro offense off balance throughout the seven-inning contest. She scattered just three hits, struck out seven batters, and issued only one walk to earn the victory. The Casey-Westfield defense provided flawless support behind her, completing the game without committing a single error.
Casey-Westfield struck early, giving Goble all the run support she would need by taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Goble helped her own cause with a solo home run to highlight the offense. Sophomore Arhianna Bonds and sophomore G. Gilbert also collected RBIs for the home team. Bonds finished 1-for-2 at the plate and added a stolen base, while junior H. Schackmann contributed a double in a 1-for-2 effort. Junior Anna Karras reached base, stole a bag, and scored a run to help spark the offense.
The hosts tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their advantage to 3-0, and Goble shut the door from there, preventing Murphysboro from mounting any late-game rallies.
Junior Blaire Fox took the hard-luck loss for Murphysboro despite a strong outing. Fox pitched all six innings for the visitors, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out five and walking just one. The Murphysboro defense matched Casey-Westfield’s clean play, also finishing with zero errors.
At the plate, senior Kylie Powell provided the biggest highlight for Murphysboro with a double. Fox and sophomore Landrie Green accounted for the team’s other two hits, but the visitors were ultimately unable to string together a scoring threat against Goble.
