Goble’s 12 Strikeouts, Early Run Support Lift Casey-Westfield Past Arthur-Okaw Christian 7-4
A disastrous first inning proved too much for the Arthur-Okaw Christian varsity softball team to overcome, as visiting Casey-Westfield capitalized on early errors and rode a 12-strikeout complete game from Ava Goble to a 7-4 non-conference victory on Tuesday.
Casey-Westfield jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lilian Beever started in the circle for the hosts and quickly fell victim to a leaky defense. A slew of defensive miscues by Arthur-Okaw Christian opened the floodgates, leading to five unearned runs. Lucy Moore and Ella Whitacre each drove in a pair of runs to highlight the Warriors’ offensive outburst, with Whitacre blasting a triple as part of a multi-hit performance.
Despite the heavy early deficit, Arthur-Okaw Christian showcased tremendous resilience and immense power at the plate. A. Herschberger was practically perfect in the box, drawing two walks and launching a pair of solo home runs. Elsie Beever also left the yard, crushing a two-run shot in the bottom of the first to immediately cut the deficit to 5-3 and breathe life into the home dugout.
Following the rocky first frame, Elsie Beever took over pitching duties for Arthur-Okaw Christian and delivered a brilliant relief performance to keep her team in the game. She tossed six innings, allowing just two earned runs on four scattered hits while striking out four without issuing a walk. However, Casey-Westfield managed to scratch across crucial insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings, courtesy of an RBI double by G. Gilbert and consistent table-setting from Gabriela Frye, who scored twice on the day.
Armed with a lead, Goble settled into a devastating rhythm for Casey-Westfield. The senior ace navigated the potent Arthur-Okaw Christian power threats to toss all seven innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits. She issued four walks but consistently pitched her way out of trouble, utilizing her 12 strikeouts to stifle any potential late-game rally and seal the 7-4 road win.
