Massive Fourth Inning Powers Casey-Westfield Past North Central 13-4
The Casey-Westfield varsity baseball team utilized an eight-run explosion in the fourth inning to break open a tightly contested game, ultimately cruising to a 13-4 non-conference road victory over North Central on Friday afternoon.
Through the first three innings, the game was a back-and-forth battle. Casey-Westfield struck first with a run in the top of the second, but North Central quickly answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame. The Thunderbirds then edged ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third, showcasing a resilient early effort against the visitors. Hayden Schultz set the table well for North Central, finishing the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
The momentum shifted entirely in the top of the fourth. Capitalizing on a combination of timely hits and defensive miscues by North Central, the Casey-Westfield offense erupted. The visitors pushed eight runs across the plate in the frame to take a commanding 9-2 advantage. North Central struggled to consistently secure outs in the field, committing four errors on the day that led to a slew of unearned runs and prolonged innings.
Despite the lopsided final score, North Central received a perfect on-base performance from Greydyn Walters, who went 2-for-2 and was hit by pitches twice. Colton Taylor added an RBI double, while Tyler Samm and Hunter Taylor each collected base hits. The Thunderbirds were aggressive on the basepaths, successfully swiping five bases as a team, but they ultimately stranded seven runners and struggled to manufacture a large-scale rally.
On the mound, North Central utilized a trio of pitchers. Bryson Marlow, Brody Ladson, and Colton Taylor shared the workload, but they were often plagued by the unearned runs stemming from the defensive errors behind them. Taylor highlighted the relief efforts by tossing two innings, allowing no earned runs while striking out two.
Casey-Westfield continually added to its lead in the late innings, manufacturing runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to seal the decisive 13-4 victory.
