Goble Tosses Shutout, Casey-Westfield Outlasts Mt. Carmel 1-0 in Extra Innings

In a classic pitchers’ duel where runs were at an absolute premium, the Casey-Westfield varsity softball team manufactured a single run in the top of the eighth inning to secure a thrilling 1-0 conference victory over host Mt. Carmel on Thursday afternoon.

The extra-inning clash was a showcase of dominant pitching and flawless defense, with neither side willing to yield. Casey-Westfield (25-26) leaned heavily on senior ace Ava Goble, who delivered a masterful complete-game shutout. Goble completely silenced the Mt. Carmel lineup, scattering just four hits over eight scoreless innings while striking out four and navigating around four walks. Goble threw 132 pitches in the marathon outing, demonstrating remarkable endurance and composure in high-pressure situations.

Mt. Carmel (25-26) matched Casey-Westfield zero-for-zero through the first seven frames. The hosts received a stellar pitching performance of their own, limiting the visitors to just five hits. However, the Mt. Carmel offense struggled to find a breakthrough against Goble, stranding runners and failing to capitalize on their limited scoring opportunities.

The stalemate finally broke in the top of the eighth inning. Whitney Fuller crossed the plate to score the game’s only run, giving Casey-Westfield a dramatic 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Gabriela Frye was a key contributor to the offense, finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI to help manufacture the deciding run. Ava Goble also helped her own cause at the plate, ripping a double and reaching base twice. Junior Anna Karras added a hit and a stolen base, executing perfectly in her role by laying down two crucial sacrifice bunts.

With the lead finally in hand, Goble returned to the circle in the bottom of the eighth and slammed the door shut, retiring the Mt. Carmel side to preserve the hard-fought 1-0 victory.
