Early Run Support Lifts Casey-Westfield Past Dieterich Baseball, 9-2
The Casey-Westfield varsity baseball team utilized a relentless 14-hit offensive attack to defeat host Dieterich 9-2 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.
Casey-Westfield set the tone immediately, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Dieterich responded with a single run in the bottom half of the frame, but the Warriors consistently added to their advantage. Casey-Westfield plated two runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth to pull away, leaving the home team playing catch-up for the remainder of the contest.
Senior J. Icenogle took the mound for Dieterich, pitching four innings and striking out three while allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Senior Dominic Ashley provided three innings of relief, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits. Despite taking the loss, the Dieterich defense played clean, error-free baseball behind their pitchers and successfully turned a double play.
Offensively, Dieterich struggled to string hits together against the Casey-Westfield pitching staff, managing just four hits on the day. Sophomore Bryce Bohnhoff led the way for the home squad with a solid 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Junior Gavin Meinhart added a hit and drove in a run, while Ashley also collected a hit. Senior Carson Baxter picked up the team’s other RBI after drawing a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
Dieterich capped the scoring with a final run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
