Gustafson Strikes Out 11 as Marshall Softball Defeats Casey-Westfield 4-1

Junior pitcher Kyla Gustafson delivered a dominant performance in the circle, striking out 11 batters to lead the Marshall varsity softball team to a 4-1 conference victory over host Casey-Westfield on Thursday.

Gustafson was the story of the game, silencing the Warriors’ bats for nearly the entire afternoon. She went the distance, allowing just two hits and one earned run over seven innings of work while issuing only a single walk. Marshall’s defense played flawlessly behind her, committing zero errors to help secure the win.

Marshall broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning, plating a pair of runs to take control. They added two crucial insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Lions’ offensive efforts were aided by four uncharacteristic errors from the Casey-Westfield defense, which resulted in two unearned runs crossing the plate.

Junior Lauren English and sophomore Lilly Nickles paced Marshall at the plate. English went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Nickles maintained a perfect 2-for-2 day at the dish. Junior Klaire York also collected two hits in the winning effort.

Casey-Westfield’s lone offensive spark came from sophomore Gabriela Frye. Frye broke up Gustafson’s shutout bid with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. She accounted for both of the Warriors’ hits on the day, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate.

In the circle, senior Ava Goble pitched a solid complete game for Casey-Westfield despite taking the loss. Goble allowed six hits and just two earned runs over seven innings, striking out five.
