Late Three-Run Surge Propels Casey-Westfield Baseball Past Marshall, 6-3
A pivotal three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Casey-Westfield varsity baseball team to a 6-3 conference victory over visiting Marshall on Thursday.
In a tightly contested matchup that saw multiple lead changes, Casey-Westfield broke a 3-3 tie in the game’s waning moments. After the Warriors opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning, Marshall responded by plating single runs in the second and third to take a 2-1 advantage.
Marshall’s offense was highlighted by extra-base hits, as Max Welsh, Gavan Propst, and Reed Ramey all delivered doubles. Welsh and Propst each drove in a run with their two-baggers, while Eli Thompson also added an RBI single. The Lions aggressively pressured the Casey-Westfield defense, tallying five stolen bases as a team, but ultimately left eight runners stranded on base.
Casey-Westfield reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth, pushing two runs across to make it 3-2. Marshall fought back to tie the game in the top of the sixth, setting the stage for the Warriors’ decisive bottom half of the frame. Benefitting from opportune hitting and three Marshall defensive errors on the afternoon, Casey-Westfield scored three times in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Payton McGuire took the loss on the mound for Marshall despite a solid effort. The right-hander pitched 5.2 innings, striking out six batters while scattering six hits. However, only four of the six runs charged to McGuire were earned, reflecting the Lions’ defensive struggles. Garrett Pugh entered in relief to record the final out for Marshall.
While individual statistics for Casey-Westfield were not reported, the Warriors capitalized on their six hits and four drawn walks to secure the crucial late-game production and the conference win.
