A dramatic four-run surge in the top of the seventh inning propelled the Casey-Westfield varsity baseball team to a thrilling 11-9 comeback victory over Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (GCMS) on Saturday afternoon at Westville High School.

In a wildly entertaining non-conference matchup defined by massive momentum swings, Casey-Westfield found themselves trailing by two runs entering their final turn at bat. With their backs against the wall, the Warriors’ offense erupted for four decisive runs, stunning the Falcons and flipping a 9-7 deficit into an 11-9 advantage. The Casey-Westfield defense then shut the door in the bottom of the seventh to secure the hard-fought win.

The game was an offensive slugfest from the opening pitch. Casey-Westfield jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but GCMS immediately answered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Falcons then pushed a single run across in the second inning to tie the game at 3-3.

Casey-Westfield reclaimed control in the middle innings, plating two runs in the third and another in the fourth to build a 6-3 cushion. However, GCMS refused to back down. The Falcons mounted a fierce rally in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to knot the game at 6-6.

The back-and-forth battle continued into the fifth inning. After the Warriors scored a single run in the top half to edge ahead 7-6, GCMS responded with their most dominant stretch of the afternoon. The Falcons plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking their first lead of the game at 9-7 and setting the stage for Casey-Westfield’s late-game heroics.

With the victory, Casey-Westfield improved their overall season record to an impressive 15-9. GCMS fell to 6-15 on the year despite a resilient offensive showing. Individual game statistics were not reported for either team.
