Illinois quick hits: $20 million for Alton housing project; alleged migrant assaults reported
$20 million for Alton housing project
Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Housing Development Authority announced the opening of a $20 million housing development offering 40 new rental homes in Madison County.
Funding for the Community of Sunnybrook in Alton included 1.5 million Low-Income Housing Tax Credits generating $12.3 million in equity, a $6.7 million COVID-19 Affordable Housing Grant from IHDA and a construction loan.
“A” for uniform human trafficking enforcement
Illinois has gone from an “F” to an “A” on Shared Hope International’s “Just Like Me” report cards focused on human trafficking survivors.
Illinois State Police say the passage of Senate Bill 2323 earlier this year drove Illinois to become one of only three states to receive an “A” grade.
ISP says the new law creates a uniform service response to human trafficking, along with policies, agency infrastructure, screening tools, training and protocols.
Alleged migrant assaults reported
A Venezuelan migrant accused of sexually attacking a woman during a Chicago home invasion Oct. 10 has been charged with committing another sexual assault in nearby Evanston the same night.
CWB Chicago reports that a Chicago police officer who arrested Yeison Diaz Gomez, 21, on Aug. 22 recognized him from a bulletin circulated by detectives.
Prosecutors said Diaz Gomez had been taken into custody 14 times since November 2024, including multiple shoplifting and narcotics cases filed while he was on pretrial release earlier this year.
