Elections board considers primary election petition objections

Gov. J.B. Pritzker has one challenger in the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial primary.

Former Chicago City Council candidate Patricia Tillman filed earlier this month, but there is an objection pending against her nominating petition.

The Illinois State Board of Elections meets Tuesday to take up dozens of objections to various candidates’ petitions.

Man charged in Vandalia murder

A man is charged in connection with the death of 14-year-old Kylie Toberman in Vandalia.

Illinois State Police say Arnold B. Rivera, 43, of Vandalia is charged with first-degree murder, concealment of a homicidal death and criminal sexual assault.

Toberman’s body was found inside a home Friday. Vandalia Police took Rivera into custody a few hours later.

15 year sentence for kidnapping

A district judge sentenced a man from St. Peters, Missouri to more than 15 years in federal prison after he admitted to kidnapping his pregnant girlfriend at gunpoint and driving her to Planned Parenthood in Fairview Heights to force her into obtaining an abortion.

Prosecutors say Kevin L. Smith, 42, kidnapped the victim from her job in St. Charles, Missouri, used a loaded firearm to intimidate her and threatened to shoot her in the head while driving her to Illinois.

In addition to 188 months in prison, Smith was sentenced to three years of supervised release.
