Casey-Westfield Capitalizes on Free Bases in 14-1 Rout of ALAH

A disciplined approach at the plate and relentless aggression on the basepaths propelled the Casey-Westfield varsity softball team to a commanding 14-1 road victory over Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond on Thursday afternoon.

The visiting Casey-Westfield offense drew a staggering 12 walks and swiped nine stolen bases, consistently applying pressure to the ALAH defense. After a scoreless first inning, the visitors broke the game open with a four-run rally in the second frame. They continued to build their advantage inning by inning, adding a single run in the third, four in the fourth, and a five-run outburst in the fifth to invoke the run rule and secure the five-inning non-conference win.

Freshman Rylee Erickson and sophomore Arhianna Bonds were perfect at the plate, each going 2-for-2 to lead the offensive charge. Bonds added an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base, while Erickson scored twice. Senior Ava Goble also contributed a pair of hits. Sophomores C. Kusterman and Gabriela Frye wreaked havoc at the top of the lineup, utilizing their patience to reach base multiple times; Kusterman finished with a hit, two RBIs, and two runs, while Frye drew a pair of walks and stole two bases.

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond struggled to find its rhythm defensively. The team committed seven fielding errors, which proved incredibly costly, resulting in seven unearned runs crossing the plate. In the circle, ALAH pitchers A. Vanausdoll and Kyndrie Carter battled control issues throughout the afternoon, combining to issue a dozen free passes against a patient Casey-Westfield lineup.

Casey-Westfield’s pitching staff, meanwhile, was highly efficient. Bonds earned the start and the victory, tossing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. Goble followed with two shutout innings of relief, striking out three while allowing just one hit.

ALAH managed to break the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning against reliever Destiney Budd. Reece Oye sparked the late offense for the hosts, recording a hit, drawing a walk, and stealing a base before crossing the plate for her team’s lone run of the contest. A. Vanausdoll, London Dugan, and Carter also recorded hits for ALAH in the loss.
