Casey-Westfield Capitalizes on Oakwood Errors, Holds On for 6-3 Victory

The Casey-Westfield varsity baseball team utilized early offense and took advantage of defensive miscues to defeat host Oakwood 6-3 in a non-conference clash on Thursday afternoon.

Casey-Westfield jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and steadily built a 4-1 advantage by the end of the third. The visitors consistently applied pressure, aided by an Oakwood defense that struggled to find its footing and committed four errors on the day.

Oakwood sophomore starter Xander Wilson took the loss despite a battling effort on the mound. Wilson struck out five batters over three innings of work, but two of the four runs he allowed were unearned due to the team’s fielding struggles.

Despite the early deficit, Oakwood showcased some impressive power at the plate to claw their way back into the contest. Wilson helped his own cause by launching a solo home run, finishing the day 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Junior Cam Harris also left the yard, ripping a solo home run of his own and drawing a walk. Sophomore Weston Frazier provided the team’s only other extra-base hit, lacing a double and eventually crossing the plate to score.

The Comets’ offense showed tremendous plate discipline, drawing nine walks as a team, but they struggled to deliver the decisive blow with runners in scoring position. Oakwood batters struck out 13 times, stranding critical baserunners throughout the afternoon.

After Oakwood narrowed the gap to 4-3 by the end of the fifth, Casey-Westfield responded with two crucial insurance runs in the top of the sixth. The late surge came against Oakwood reliever Carsen Dudley, who otherwise pitched well, striking out four batters over three innings of relief.

Sophomore Riglee Hart closed out the game for Oakwood on a high note, tossing a flawless seventh inning while striking out two of the three batters he faced, but the Comets were unable to mount a final rally in the bottom of the frame.
