Early Surge and Defensive Miscues Propel Casey-Westfield Past Centennial 11-1

The Casey-Westfield varsity baseball team took full advantage of early free passes and a porous defense, erupting for six runs in the opening frame to cruise to an 11-1 six-inning, mercy-rule victory over Centennial on Saturday afternoon.

Centennial’s pitching staff struggled to find the strike zone out of the gate, and the defense behind them offered little relief. Casey-Westfield drew nine walks and capitalized on five Centennial errors over the course of the afternoon. In fact, of the 11 runs surrendered by Centennial pitchers, only one was earned.

Junior Tate Sauer started on the mound for the Chargers but was chased after just one-third of an inning, issuing four walks and allowing six unearned runs as Casey-Westfield batted around. Relievers Madden Ritter, Parker Dacanay, and Ryan Schimmel combined to finish the game, pitching admirably to stop the bleeding, but the six-run first-inning deficit proved too steep to overcome.

Offensively, Centennial was limited to just three hits against a sharp Casey-Westfield pitching staff. Dacanay, Sauer, and Schimmel each singled for the Chargers. Junior Chris Miller manufactured Centennial’s lone run in the top of the third inning. After reaching base on a hit-by-pitch, Miller wreaked havoc on the basepaths, ultimately stealing three bases and crossing the plate to briefly cut the deficit to 7-1.

Despite the lopsided score, Centennial showed aggression on the basepaths all afternoon, swiping six total bags as a team. However, Casey-Westfield’s steady offensive output ensured the game ended early. After their six-run first, the home team tacked on single runs in the second, fifth, and sixth innings, alongside a two-run fourth, eventually triggering the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth.
