Power Surge and Goble’s Arm Lead Casey-Westfield Softball Past St. Anthony, 7-1
The Casey-Westfield varsity softball team showcased its power at the plate and prowess in the circle on Saturday, launching a pair of home runs to defeat St. Anthony 7-1 in home tournament action.
The hosts wasted no time taking control of the contest, erupting for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. That early offensive explosion set the tone for an 11-hit Casey-Westfield attack that featured six extra-base hits, keeping the St. Anthony defense on its heels all afternoon.
Senior Ava Goble was the ultimate dual-threat for Casey-Westfield. In addition to earning the victory in the circle, Goble showcased her power by blasting a home run. Junior H. Schackmann matched her teammate’s power, also sending a pitch over the outfield fence for a home run of her own.
Casey-Westfield’s lineup was relentless from top to bottom. Sophomores Gabriela Frye and Ella Whitacre, along with junior Anna Karras and senior Lucy Moore, each recorded multi-hit games. Frye finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored, while Karras went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Whitacre highlighted her 2-for-3 performance by ripping a triple, and senior Addison Seaton added a double to the team’s impressive extra-base tally.
While the offense provided ample run support, Goble went to work shutting down the St. Anthony lineup. The senior right-hander pitched five strong innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits. She struck out six batters and worked out of a few jams caused by four walks. Sophomore Arhianna Bonds entered in relief to pitch the final two frames, striking out a pair while scattering two hits to slam the door and preserve the win.
St. Anthony managed its lone run in the top of the third inning. Julia Schultz and Nancy Ruholl were the bright spots for the visiting offense, each finishing the game with two hits. Schultz added a double to her ledger.
Casey-Westfield’s offense pulled away late, adding a single run in the fifth and a three-run surge in the sixth inning to firmly secure the 7-1 tournament victory.
