Gilbert Drives in Five as Casey-Westfield Outslugs Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 11-7
The Casey-Westfield varsity softball team unleashed a 17-hit offensive barrage on Tuesday afternoon, securing an 11-7 road victory over non-conference opponent Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.
Sophomore G. Gilbert was the primary run producer for the visiting Casey-Westfield squad, delivering a massive performance at the plate. Gilbert finished 3-for-4 with a double and a game-high five RBIs. The top of the lineup consistently set the table for her, utilizing a combination of contact hitting and aggressive baserunning.
Sophomore Arhianna Bonds was perfect in the batter’s box, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a staggering four stolen bases. Junior Anna Karras was nearly as effective, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs, an RBI, and three steals. Senior Ava Goble also contributed heavily to the 17-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Casey-Westfield jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg proved resilient, consistently battling back to keep the game within reach. Junior C. Johnson sparked the hosts’ offense, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Junior Mya Friese added a 2-for-3 performance with two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base, while senior Cameron Carey chipped in with two hits of her own.
The hosts capitalized on a few Casey-Westfield defensive miscues in the middle innings, plating three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to tighten the contest. In total, Casey-Westfield committed three errors, which led to five unearned runs crossing the plate for Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.
Despite the defensive hiccups, Goble stood tall in the pitching circle for Casey-Westfield. The senior right-hander tossed a complete game, navigating around nine hits and the defensive errors to allow just two earned runs. Goble struck out six batters and issued three walks over her 109-pitch outing to earn the victory.
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg utilized two pitchers in the loss. Mya Friese handled four innings of work, allowing four unearned runs on six hits, while freshman Kalia Friese pitched three innings, surrendering four earned runs on ten hits. Both teams were plagued by unearned runs, with the two squads combining to allow 11 unearned runs over the course of the afternoon.
Casey-Westfield pulled away late, pushing across three crucial insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning and adding one more in the seventh to cement the 11-7 final.
