The Casey-Westfield varsity softball team orchestrated a decisive late-game rally on Thursday, erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure an 8-2 home victory over Waltonville.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the late stages of the game, the Warriors’ bats came alive at the perfect time to break the game open and defend their home field.

Waltonville struck first, scratching across a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Despite a strong performance from Waltonville’s starting pitcher, junior E. Schoenbaechler—who racked up an impressive 11 strikeouts over six innings of work—Casey-Westfield’s pitching kept them well within striking distance.

Senior Ava Goble was the engine for Casey-Westfield both in the circle and at the plate. Goble pitched a complete game, tossing 122 pitches over seven innings. She allowed just one earned run on six hits while striking out six to earn the victory.

Offensively, Goble paced the Warriors by going 3-for-4 with a home run and a run scored. Junior H. Schackmann also provided a major power surge, launching a home run of her own while finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior Ella Whitacre chipped in with two hits and an RBI to help fuel the potent Casey-Westfield attack.

Waltonville extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning, driven by the offensive efforts of junior Marlee Gant, who finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs, accounting for both of her team’s runs.

The Warriors answered with their first run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 2-1, setting the stage for their massive seven-run outburst in the sixth inning. Capitalizing on four Waltonville walks and timely hitting, Casey-Westfield flipped the script to walk away with a commanding 8-2 win.
